The machine works by tumbling material inside a large, gently sloped, rotating cylinder or “drum” that is lined with a screen. Smaller particles fall through the screen holes, while larger particles travel down the length of the drum and exit at the end.
The principle behind the Rotary Drum Screener, sometimes called a trommel screen, is very simple and effective. We designed it for high efficiency and extreme durability. Imagine a long, hollow pipe made of screen mesh, tilted at a slight angle and spinning slowly.
Feeding the Material: Raw material, like finished fertilizer granules, is fed into the higher end of the drum.
Rotation and Tumbling: As the drum rotates, it gently lifts and tumbles the material. This constant motion does two things. First, it prevents the material from clogging up. Second, it makes sure every single particle comes into contact with the screen surface many times.
Separation by Size: The screen is made with holes of a specific size, for example, 4 millimeters. Any particle smaller than 4mm will fall through the screen onto a conveyor belt below. This is your finished, correctly sized product.
Discharging Large Particles: Any particle larger than 4mm cannot pass through the holes. Because the drum is tilted, these oversized particles slowly travel down the length of the drum and exit at the lower end. These particles are then sent back to your fertilizer crusher to be broken down again.
We can also build multi-stage screeners. These have different screen sizes along the drum’s length, allowing you to separate your material into three or four different sizes in a single pass.

Why Is Screening So Important for You?
Screening is critical because it directly controls the quality and value of your final product. It also makes your entire production line more efficient by eliminating waste and creating a closed-loop system.
Without a good screening process, you are leaving money on the table. A Rotary Drum Screener provides three huge benefits that go straight to your bottom line.
Guarantees Premium Product Quality
Your customers want a uniform product. Granules that are all the same size look more professional, are easier to package, and spread more evenly on fields. A bag of fertilizer with dust, powder, and giant lumps looks cheap and is difficult to use. By separating out the perfectly sized 2-4mm granules, you create a premium product that you can sell for a higher price.
Creates an Efficient, No-Waste System
A screening machine is the key to an efficient production loop.
versized Granules are not waste. They are sent back to the crusher and then returned to the fertilizer granulator.
Undersized Fines (dust and small particles) are also not waste. They are sent directly back to the granulator to be reformed into new granules. This means that 100% of your raw material eventually becomes a saleable product.
Definition and Function
The organic fertilizer drum screening machine is mainly used for the separation of finished organic fertilizer products and return materials, as well as the grading of finished products to ensure uniform grading of finished products. It uses the rotation of the drum and the friction between the materials to complete the screening work, and has the characteristics of strong processing capacity, high screening efficiency, reasonable technical parameters, high structural strength, reliable operation, low noise, and easy maintenance.
Installation and commissioning of drum screening machine
Installation inspection: Ensure that all components are installed correctly according to the drawings, and that the fasteners are firm and reliable.
Trial operation: Conduct a trial operation before putting it into formal use to check whether the equipment runs smoothly and whether each component is coordinated.
Adjustment and optimization: Adjust equipment parameters based on trial operation to ensure optimal screening performance.

Can It Handle My Sticky Materials?
Yes, our Rotary Drum Screeners are specifically designed to handle wet, sticky materials like fresh compost or high-moisture fertilizer without clogging. We include a built-in, automatic cleaning device.
This is a very common problem that we have solved. Many producers know that trying to screen wet compost or sticky granules can be a nightmare. The screen holes quickly get plugged with material, a problem called “blinding.” When the screen is blinded, nothing can pass through, and the machine stops working effectively.
To prevent this, we equip our Rotary Drum Screeners with a cleaning mechanism.
Cleaning Brush: For many applications, a long, rotating nylon brush is positioned on top of the drum. As the drum turns, the brush actively cleans the screen holes, pushing out any material that tries to stick.
Tapping Hammer: In other designs, a series of small hammers continuously tap on the outside of the screen. This vibration is enough to dislodge any sticky particles and keep the screen mesh clear.
This feature means you can screen your material at the ideal moisture level for your process without worrying about constant stops to clean the machine. It ensures consistent performance and high throughput, even with difficult materials.

Where Does It Fit in My Production Line?
A Rotary Drum Screener is used in two main places in a fertilizer production line. You can use it right after composting to prepare raw material, or at the very end of the line for final product quality control.
The placement of your screener depends on your goal. Both positions are essential for creating a high-quality product in a complete fertilizer production line .
Position 1: After Composting (Pre-Screening)
After your raw organic material has been fully composted using a compost turner , it often contains large, non-composted items like wood chips, stones, or plastic.
Why screen here? Screening the compost before it enters the rest of your process is a critical first step. It removes these contaminants, which protects your more delicate machines like crushers and granulators from damage.
The Result: You get a fine, uniform organic powder that is perfect for mixing and granulation.
Position 2: After Granulation and Drying (Final Screening)
This is the most common and most important use for the screener. It is the final quality control checkpoint before bagging.
Why screen here? The granulation and drying process never produces 100% perfectly sized granules. You will always have some that are too big and some that are too small.
The Result: The screener separates the final product into three streams: the perfect granules (to packaging), the oversized granules (back to the crusher), and the undersized fines (back to the granulator). This ensures every bag you sell contains only the best product.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Question 1: What is the difference between a rotary screener and a vibrating screen? A Rotary Drum Screener is better for bulk materials and can handle higher moisture content. It is perfect for compost and fertilizer granules. A vibrating screen shakes a flat screen deck and is generally used for finer, drier powders where very precise separation is needed.
Question 2: How do I choose the right screen mesh size? The mesh size depends entirely on your target product specification. The most common size for standard fertilizer granules is a range of 2mm to 4mm. We will work with you to select the precise mesh size to meet your market’s needs.
Question 3: What kind of maintenance does this machine need? It requires very little maintenance. Because of its simple design and slow rotation speed, wear and tear is minimal. You will just need to perform regular lubrication of the bearings and support rollers and occasionally check the screen for any signs of wear.
Question -4: Can I change the screen to make a different product size? Yes. The screen sections on our machines are designed to be replaceable. You can easily unbolt an old screen section and install a new one with a different hole size. This gives you the flexibility to produce different product grades with a single machine.
